Video Project One: Filming a Welcome Message

The goal of this project is to learn how to create a short video using commonly available technology and then place it on a website. You will be creating a welcome message that will be placed on your Academic Resume Website in Google Sites.

Instructions:

  • Using a smart phone or tablet, shoot a short welcome message. If you don't own one, borrow one from a classmate.
    • Option A: Shoot a video of you saying "Welcome"
    • Option B: Shoot a video of you writing the word "Welcome". You may use the white board and markers if you wish.
    • In either case, shoot in landscape, not in portrait. This is a requirement. It's also the best way to shoot video! Click here to find out why. Click here to see a video that explains it another way.

Below is a screen shot from an iPhone video in edit mode. The same features exist in the Android video editing environment, and in all software designed for editing video. Take a look at the diagram, open your phone, and identify each element as you edit a video clip. The goal is always to get rid of as much as possible. "If it doesn't add, it distracts" (Elliot Randal).

  • Optional: Embed the video in your personal website in Dreamweaver for extra credit on the assignment of your choice.

FAQ

Q: When I tap the YouTube upload button, nothing happens. What should I do?

Before you try the options below, confirm that you are signed on to your school Google account on your phone. Close any other applications that are running in the background.

A: Option One: From your school Google account, send yourself an email and attach your video. From there, save the video to your Google Drive. Navigate to your YouTube account, and import the video from your drive.

A: Option Two: If you don't have sufficient available memory, you will not be able to send a video. Free up more memory on your phone, restart the phone, and try again.

Q: I am unhappy with my grade. Is there anything I can do?

A: Yes. Go back, correct all errors and omissions, and resubmit your work after school, Monday through Thursday. It will only take me a moment to re-grade your work. I will raise your score if you have fulfilled all of the requirements, as long as you resubmit the work in a reasonable amount of time.

Q: What do you mean by the head and tail?

A: I am referring to the beginning and end of the video clip. See the diagram, above. This can be done on the phone itself, or in the YouTube editing environment.
